PRESS RELEASE - STINGING INSECTS

Defense Against Wasps, Hornets, and Bees

(Cincinnati, Ohio – Sept. 4, 2003) Stinging insects love wet weather. This year, bees, wasps, and hornets have developed especially large colonies in and near homes, schools, businesses, and public buildings. These stinging insects, especially large numbers, are more than a nuisance. Their stings can cause pain and swelling, severe allergic reactions – including constriction of the throat so as to cut off oxygen – and even death in animals and humans. Since the insect colonies are at their fullest in late summer and early fall, now is the time to take precautions to protect ourselves, our families, and our pets from the most common stinging insects in our area.

® Caution: When mowing the lawn or cutting weeds, pruning bushes, or sawing wood with motorized tools, watch out for nests of stinging insects.

Bees, wasps, and hornets can react to the buzzing of small engines - by attacking – as they would react to the buzzing of an approaching rival insect colony.

The size of a yellow jacket colony can range from 75 to more than 5,000 yellow jackets. They build paper-mâché nests in vegetation, in underground cavities, on the outside surface of buildings, and in wall voids between interior surfaces.

® Caution: Do not spray the entry hole.

The few insects that are sprayed directly will die, but the spray will make the rest of the colony more aggressive.

® Caution: Do not block the entry hole now.

If the yellow jackets cannot get out of their nest cavity through the entry hole, they might become more aggressive and swarm into other parts of the building. They can gnaw through drywall, wood, and other materials in a few days or weeks. Then they will escape from the wall void through electrical outlets, light fixtures, vents, and other openings to enter your living space.

At this time of year, when stinging insects are active and numerous, the least risky course of action to rid your house or business of large insect colonies is to call a professional pest-control company.
